The waterway is deep and wide enough to handle the world's largest crude oil tankers, which is why it carries such enormous volumes. A single tanker leaving the Gulf typically carries more than a million barrels of oil, so even a small change in the number of daily crossings shows up quickly in world energy markets.

How Wide Is the Strait of Hormuz?

Encyclopaedia Britannica gives the strait's width as 35 to 60 miles (55 to 95 km). The IEA puts the narrowest point at 29 nautical miles, about 54 km. Across much of that width the water is 60 to 100 metres deep, enough to handle oil tankers.

That combination of width and depth shaped decades of assumptions. Because the channel is wide and deep almost everywhere, it was long assumed that no country could block the whole strait for any prolonged period.

Who Controls the Strait of Hormuz?

Nobody owns it outright. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the shipping lanes run mostly through Omani territorial waters and partly through Iranian waters, and they are governed by international maritime law under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Iran controls the strait north of the lanes, and Oman controls it to the south.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters for Oil

The IEA estimates that an average of 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products moved through the strait in 2025, around 25 percent of the world's seaborne oil trade. The EIA puts 2024 flows at 20 million barrels per day, equal to about 20 percent of global petroleum liquids consumption.

Oil loaded inside the Persian Gulf has very few ways out other than through Hormuz, which is why the EIA describes it as the world's most important oil chokepoint even though Malacca carries slightly more. The June recovery was real but short. Tracking firm AXSMarine counted 25 commercial vessels crossing on one day in mid-June, the busiest since mid-April and more than three times the average of just over seven a day since early March.

Is the Strait of Hormuz Open Right Now?

Open in law, far from open in practice. The Lloyd's List monitor, which counts vessels over 10,000 deadweight tonnes, recorded 75 transits in the week of 31 August to 6 September, down from 116 the week before.

For context, the same monitor counted 3,098 transits in February 2026, an average of about 110 a day. August's total was 486, a fall of 84.3 percent. The strait is passable, but the ships using it are a small, specialised slice of the pre-war fleet.

Other vessel types made up the rest. Of the 75 transits, 18 were linked to Iran, meaning the ship was sailing to or from an Iranian port, was owned, managed or flagged in Iran, or was sanctioned. Dark transits, made without a normal AIS signal, accounted for 54.

Who Is Still Sailing Through the Strait of Hormuz

The traffic that remains is dominated by tankers doing short, repeated runs. Lloyd's List Intelligence describes a shuttle network: tankers move crude between the Gulf and offshore transfer areas, where the cargo passes to other ships. Vortexa data cited in its 27 August brief puts ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman at an average of 3.1 million barrels per day since the memorandum collapsed, almost 30 percent of the 5.6 million barrels per day exported from the Gulf over the same period.

That model concentrates risk on a small group of ships and crews. More tankers are joining the trade, particularly Gulf state-owned vessels and ships linked to South Korea's Sinokor, but the southern route is still dangerous. In the week of that brief, a Greek-linked tanker was hit by a projectile in the Omani corridor, the third Greek-linked vessel struck that month.

Container shipping has largely stayed away, with a single containership crossing in the first week of September. Operators are also changing how they crew these voyages: some vessels now use dedicated crews for the Hormuz passage and change personnel once outside the conflict zone, backed by wage premiums and extra welfare measures.

Seafarers Stranded in the Persian Gulf

Behind every transit figure are the people on board. When the conflict began, ships inside the Gulf had no safe way out, and in early April the IMO said around 20,000 civilian seafarers were still aboard vessels there.

An IMO-led evacuation in late June moved 115 ships with roughly 2,500 crew out of the Gulf in three and a half days, according to UN News. It was paused after the container ship Ever Lovely, which was not part of the operation, was struck near the Omani coast.

In its six-month statement on 28 August, the IMO said it had verified at least 70 attacks on international shipping, with 19 seafarers killed, and that up to 400 ships carrying around 6,000 seafarers had been unable to leave safely.

The live map around Hormuz is noisy, so follow one ship deliberately rather than scanning the area.

  1. Search by name, IMO number or MMSI instead of clicking on the map, where spoofed and invented vessels mix with real ones.
  2. Check when the last position was received. An old timestamp near the strait can mean the ship has gone dark, not that it has stopped.
  3. Read navigation status and speed together, and look for a track that matches both.
  4. Compare the reported destination and ETA with the actual track, since around Hormuz the destination field has even carried political messages.
  5. Judge a single position against the week's transit data rather than on its own.

The human side may prove the hardest constraint. Access to qualified seafarers willing to operate in conflict zones may become a major bottleneck, according to the same analysis, and prolonged exposure could deepen the global seafarer shortage.
